One Parent to Another

One Monday night a few weeks ago, my daughter Maddie & I were deciding where to go for dinner. I joked that we could go to “Yours Truly” for Kids Night like we used to do when she was little. We laughed over the image of her sitting in one of the tiny chairs making a paper bag puppet with pipe cleaners and glitter, all the other kids clinging to their parents not wanting to go make puppets because there is a “big scary girl” over there.

You see, my daughter likes to dress well…differently. She wears lots of black, chains on her pants, skull & cross bones on her shirts, and spiky bracelets. Since she first started dressing this way over a year ago we have both had to learn how to handle strange looks. Usually we can laugh about it, but sometimes it hurts.

Like the time we were shopping at Berean Christian bookstore, loading up on good stuff to read and Skillet CD’s. Maddie went out to sit on the bench by the door while I checked out. A woman walked in, stopped and gave Maddie a nasty look as if to say “what are you doing here?” then she opened up the door and walked into a place full of items that are supposed to help us learn to be more like Jesus. Does that seem strange to anyone but me?

I will admit that I did not really care for her new style choice at first. I was glad she was not wanting to wear really short skirts and skimpy shirts, but still this look was pretty scary to me. I remember her coming home from EDGE band practice one night last year telling me all about this really cool couple that looked just like her. I met Micah & Jessica Irwin for first time at the next EDGE night. He was all decked out in baggy black pants with chains, big spiky jewelry, black nail polish, and blue tipped mohawk. (Many of you know them, or will remember him from the Café where he often played bass) I could see right away why Maddie thought he was cool…but as I got to know him & Jessica I learned that it goes way deeper than that. They are so genuine in their love for God and for others. They live their lives and their faith to the fullest.

I am so glad that they were there for Maddie at time when she was trying to figure out her identity. They showed her that you can love Jesus and live for him and still be who you are. They also challenged me to look beyond the surface with people. I will be forever grateful for all they poured into my daughter’s life and for helping me to understand my own child better.

Styles come and styles go, but it is the heart that matters most. And if you ever find yourself thinking that some kid is trouble just because he wears chains on his pants or has funky hair, I want you to go and get out your high school senior picture…now that is pretty scary!

Yeah that was a cool story. That woman was really rude to do that-espesilly (how do you spell that?) when she went into a christian store afterwords! It's toatally true about it doen't matter what you wear on the outside it matters on what you are on the inside. Im sure you've all heard that but it's so true. I also can judge a person at a first glance-I do it a lot sometimes and I shouldn't whether they dress in all black or all pink. This story made me realized that I judge people a lot.

That is so true! I hate the way I judge people from the outside. I wish I could get to know some of the people I thought or think are wierd.

By the way, it's me, Katrina.

I also like the story. I think it is true that you should never judge a person by there apperance because jesus never did but then again we're not jesus and we are not perfect so if you see a guy running around naked in a store your first thought is how did he get in here without clothes and your second thought is wow, he's crazy, but he might be a really nice guy who's sleep walking!! I think most goth ( no offense) people are really freaky but some of them are reallly nice!! My teacher has purplish orangish hair that is really spiky but she's really awsome and cool and makes me want to go to school evey day, but that's just my oppinion!! Har har har!!

I think thats a cool story because it makes us think how we see someone whos dressed really wierd, and immediatly we think, "whoa, i better stay away from that kid, those are some of the freakiest clothes ever." we could actually be missing out on meeting someone nice. that person was really rude. you can tell she wasnt a christian just because of her judgement. thanks for the story todd, you Rock!!!

Hi It's me again. I now have to comment after Evan. If I saw i guy running naked in a store the first thing i would think would be "Ewww! Why the heck isn't he wearing any clothes? He is weird." I might be a little afraid of him too. a guy who go's running through a store with no clothes is creepy. Also i agree w/ evan. he could be really crazy but really nice-hey I can be crazy sometimes. (although i would never run though a store nude)

This is a great story!!! It is really hard not to judge people from the outside - if they are dressed in all black you think that they are rebels or if they're in all pink you think they're sooo preppy, or something like that - but there really are REALLY nice people underneath!!! It is definitely something i need to work on. Thanks for the story!!!

P.S.

Goth peeps can somtime freak me out if they are like, high school boys all dressed in black w/ peirced ears, spiked hair and every thing else but i've never really gotten to know a goth.

Haha that would be kinda creepy if you saw a guy running around naked. But I mean what if it were you, and you were sleepwalking (or sleeprunning), you wouldn't want people to judge you.

BTW that was me who posted that last coment too. (the one before maggie's) I forgot to put my name :)

I am friends with this girl who dresses in all black, and spiky stuff, and chains and stuff, but she is really nice underneath. She was just telling me how she hated it how people at her school would make fun of her, like they would be like "Let me see your wrists" (because emo people slit thier wrists.) It is just really unfair to the people who are nice underneath, and just like to dress in black and stuff.
